Robe Less Traveled: How to Wear Pajamas at Work

Pajamas for the workplace? Yeah, right. Like you’d really pull up to your 9 a.m. offsite wearing footie pjs.

Well, thanks to fashion powerhouses--namely Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton--dressing as if you were about to hit the hay has become an acceptable form of day wear and, better believe it, office wear. But as with any trend, there are some guidelines. (Rule 1: No nighties allowed.)

Here, a few tips on how to nail pajama-chic:

Pay attention to footwear We’re all for comfortable shoes, but a pair of wide-leg pants pretty much negates ballet flats (you’ll look frumpy). Instead, break out those block heels or pumps to elongate your legs.

Mind your fabrics Sure, fleece sweats may be the ultimate when it comes to cozy jammies, but we’re not about to take the trend that far. Opt for either silk or a poly blend and you won’t look as if you actually just rolled out of bed.

Add some structure A slouchy pajama top can take a turn for the worse if your pants lean toward the androgynous side (read: boyfriend jeans). Instead, we like a button-front shirt paired with a feminine A-line skirt or cropped trousers. Tucked in or no
