Disturbing Couple

This is 24-year-old Chinese pop star Zhang Muyi and his 12-year-old model GIRLFRIEND, Akama Miki. Yes, I said GIRLFRIEND. The couple, both famous in China, who have been “dating” since Miki was 11, have gone public with their “relationship,” posting lovey-dovey photos of themselves “finger kissing” and shmoopy messages like “I will always love you and you will be my darling forever!!!” on China’s social media site, Weibo. Instead of raised eyebrows and condemnation, they’ve gained nearly one million fans in the process.

You’d think people might be a little bit disturbed, even though they don’t seem to be involved sexually, by a 24-year-old man who say things like “I’m going to be with you as you grow, I’ll always wait for you … I simply can’t wait for these next four birthdays of yours to pass, I’m counting down each one,”" to his seriously underage (as in that shit’s illegal until her next four birthdays pass and she’s 16) girlfriend. But no. They are supportive, offering words of encouragement like, “Love knows no boundaries, a 12-year-old with a 24-year-old is not a big deal.” Really? Because I think love does and should know some boundaries. But that’s just me. And the LAW agrees.
Others are claiming that this “relationship” is just a stunt to help launch Akama Miki’s music career. I’ve posted the music video of the couple’s first duet for your listening pleasure. Their next single is called “Courageous Love.” Nice name!

Before you drum up a Celine Dion and Rene Angelil defense, I will point out that although Celine and Rene met when they were 12 and 38 respectively, Rene waited until Celine was a legal and respectable 19 to start a romantic relationship. So that’s that. Is anyone else disturbed by this even if it is some kind of PR stunt? She’s 12. That ain’t right.
