RIP Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, the revered South African anti-apartheid icon who spent 27 years in prison, led his country to democracy and became its first black president, died Thursday at home. He was 95.
"He is now resting," said South African President Jacob Zuma. "He is now at peace."
"Our nation has lost his greatest son," he continued. "Our people have lost their father."
A state funeral will be held, and Zuma called for mourners to conduct themselves with "the dignity and respect" that Mandela personified.

RIP Paul Walker

Paul Walker's tragic death at the age of 40 in a fiery car crash isn't just a great loss to the entertainment world. His passing has also left an enormous hole in the hearts of his fans and everyone who was close to him. Sadly, the handsome movie star best known for his starring turn in the blockbuster franchise that started with 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" has now joined a host of other stars who died before their careers -- and lives -- reached their full potential.

The oldest of five kids raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, Paul got his start in Hollywood with small parts he landed as a child. Soon after he garnered bigger roles in teen-focused films including "Varsity Blues," "She's All That" and "The Skulls" before his career really took off thanks to the "Fast & Furious" franchise. Paul was a devoted father to daughter Meadow Rain, 15, who in recent years had moved to California from Hawaii to live with her father -- a self-described "outdoorsman, ocean addict and adrenaline junkie." But Paul and a friend's life came to an abrupt end in Santa Clarita, Calif., on Nov. 30, where Paul was co-hosting a charity car show through his non-profit organization Reach Out Worldwide to raise money for victims of the recent Philippines typhoon. Witnesses say Paul climbed into the passenger seat of a cherry-red Porsche as close pal Roger Rodas got behind the wheel -- and within minutes of taking the car out for a spin, they were tragically killed when it burst into flames after crashing just a few blocks away.

Remembering Margaret Thatcher

Remembering Margaret Thatcher

(1925–2013)

Margaret Thatcher

So she has gone, Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher of Grantham; the first female prime minister of the United Kingdom and its longest-serving prime minister of the twentieth century; the Iron Lady, the greatest British prime minister since Winston Churchill. She was the first woman—ever—to lead a political party in this cradle of parliamentary democracy. She herself once said that she thought there would be no woman prime minister “in my lifetime.” She thought there was a possibility that a woman could be chancellor of the exchequer.

Although it was entirely expected that the news of her passing would come quite soon, certainly anticipated by the news media—at 87, she was clearly becoming increasingly frail—it was a surprise when it happened. Because death always is a surprise.

There will now follow, in Britain, a slightly uncomfortable passage of days leading up to Baroness Thatcher’s final rite of passage. Because in death she appears to have divided this slightly bonkers country as cleanly as she did in life.

Personally, she was a phenomenon: She worked like a demon; never took vacations. Thatcher rolled through the House of Commons like a gun carriage, head down, handbag clamped in the crook of her arm, eyes flashing.

The twentieth-century turning point for feminism came a little later in Britain than it did in the United States. She was the leader of her party in opposition during the 1970s, and a man’s woman. She liked men; knew how to deal with them; knew how to divide and rule them.

'Soul' man Don Cornelius dead at 75

Don Cornelius, the honey-voiced music man behind "Soul Train," has passed away, HLN confirms.
Police responded to a call about a shooting at a home in the 12000 block of Mulholland Drive at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tenesha Dodine said.
Police transported Cornelius to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound. There were reports that the death was a suicide, but there is an ongoing investigation into whether the gunshot was self-inflicted.
Cornelius was known for offering more exposure to black musicians through his revolutionary programming, and for his smooth signature catch phrases.
In that spirit, we wish Don love, peace and soul:
