How's the old adage go? The best things in life are free. But for families in NYC, that may sound like crazy talk. From housing to classes to entertainment, everything here seems to cost so much money... or does it?
The fact is, there's plenty of FREE fun for kids in New York City. But even top family attractions that charge entry fees, like museums, zoos and amusement parks, offer no-cost admission for children under certain ages. And those savings can really add up, especially when you have preschoolers.

Our July NYC Go List is truly spectacular, and includes lots of cool things to do with kids of all ages, even hard-to-please teens like rock 'n' roll circus Monkey: Journey to the West , a vintage carnival ride festival on Governors Island and City of Water Day featuring FREE boat rides.

We also rounded up the best family festivals in July and August and almost all of them are FREE.

For a while now, many of our readers have been begging us to write more about Upper Manhattan.  Well we have good news: Our month-long focus on Washington Heights and Inwood kicked off this week with a list

Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Display isn't the only thing that will give you a big bang for no bucks this holiday. Our best bets for the four-day weekend include lots of free fun including Wave Hill's Welcome Home Weekend, SummerStage Kids' Family Day in Central Park and no-cost admission to the Children's Museum of Manhattan.

Regardless of where you're spending the 4th of July, fireworks are probably the main event. In NYC, Macy's is celebrating the 37th anniversary of its annual fireworks spectacular on the Hudson River and we've got the scoop on the best spots to watch in Manhattan and across the water in New Jersey.

If a four-day NYC staycation is what you're after, there are plenty of FREE and fun things to do as a family. Cheer on the contestants at Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. Catch top-notch entertainers like Elizabeth Mitchell at SummerStage Kids Global Family Day in Central Park. Celebrate the reopening of the renovated Wave Hill House with a weekend of art projects, live music and garden tours. And while it's not free, Lincoln Center's new multimedia extravaganza Monkey: Journey to the West sounds like a blast for tweens and up. Bonus: We're giving away four tickets to the show.

Independence Day 2013 is on Thursday and Long Island is full of celebrations. Here is a lineup of the shows we found in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Check with your local town hall, chamber of commerce, or fire department if you don’t see a fireworks show near you. Some towns and villages have yet to post show details online. Unless otherwise noted, firework shows begin at dusk, and generally end between 9-10 pm. Arrive early to ensure a good viewing spot. If heading to the East End, please be sure to check out 4th Of July Fireworks On The North Fork And The Hamptons.
If you love fireworks but have children who fear the sound of loud bangs, here are some helpful tips: Give them headphones or high quality earplugs. A child-size set of headphones will do the trick. Just reducing the noise helps kids enjoy the pretty lights without fear. Give kids a bell to ring or a horn to toot after each burst. This method seems to help kids cope with the noise.

Grucci classifies this show as a world class event, with crowd capacity ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 viewers. Gates to the park open at 5 pm. The show at 5:30 pm features music by Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops, followed by the Somethin’ Fresh R&B band. Fireworks begin at dusk. Tickets are required and are free at any TD Bank branch.

Father's Day Weekend with NYC Kids: Free SummerStage Brooklyn Family Day, Fish Parade & Festival, Jazz Age Lawn Party June 15

Dad's the king on Sunday but you can celebrate Father's Day in NYC all weekend long with a wide variety of fun family outings. Saturday brings the annual Hunts Point Fish Parade and Festival and the Turtle Cove Golf and Baseball Center's opening season festivities. On Sunday, groove to cool tunes at SummerStage Brooklyn Family Day or catch a 19th-century style baseball game at the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion. Or dance the weekend away at the retro Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island.
For those of you who like to plan ahead, two awesome free summer performance series kick off this weekend: the River to River Festival in Lower Manhattan, which runs through Sunday, July 14 and the Harlem Meer Performance Festival in northern Central Park, which goes through Labor Day weekend. Also, beginning this Friday you can enter the lottery for the NYC Park Department's FREE summer swimming lessons, which start in July.

Brooklyn Bridge Cup & Block Party – Fort Greene
Young Rock Soccer Academy and the Hip Tot Music Fest team up for two days of soccer matches. But the main event is Saturday's giant block party featuring live performances by local kiddie rockers Rolie Polie Guacamole, AudraRox and Love Funk. Games, kids' activities and food trucks round out the day. Free admission but there are fees for activities.
Puppetry Arts Festival of Brooklyn – Park Slope
Head to the awesome J.J. Byrne Playground to meet Noel MacNeal (the man behind Lionel the Lion from PBS Kids' Between the Lions), pose with Star Wars characters, hit the bouncy house, play games and catch shows by Puppetry Arts. The first 200 kids to arrive snag free goody bags. Free admission but there are fees for activities.
Hunts Point Fish Parade and Summer Festival – the Bronx
Bronx community organization The Point sponsors this waterfront neighborhood celebration. The parade kicks off in Riverside Park and boasts colorful costumes and floats. After the march, join the festivities in beautiful Barretto Point Park, which include hip-hop DJs, live music performances by local schools, art projects, giveaways and more. FREE
Sketching Tour: Hopper Drawing: What is a Sketch? – Upper East Side
While the Whitney Wees' Hopper Draws program is already sold out for Saturday, the workshop for children ages 6 to 10 is still open as of this writing. Kids can explore the museum's extensive exhibition of Edward Hopper's drawings and then experiment with some of his techniques. Advance registration required. $10 per family.
Turtle Cove Golf and Baseball Complex Grand Opening Celebration – the Bronx
Mark the sports center's seasonal opening with no-cost batting clinics, rounds of mini-golf, face painting, carnival games and cotton candy. FREE
