If
you’re planning on wearing that newly-purchased dress to a party
tonight and then returning it the next day, you’re out of luck. Stores
such as Bloomingdales are cracking down on the common practice of
customers buying an item, wearing it once and then returning it.
According to Bloomberg,
Bloomies has implemented a new tagging system on clothing that makes it
impossible to wear the clothes and then take them back. The new tags
are three-inch visible black plastic devices that are left on and
displayed on the outside of an outfit, even after the consumer purchases
the item and leaves the store. Once they decide to wear the item, they
must remove a tag from the item—the tag cannot be reattached, making it
impossible for a consumer to wear a dress out that night, then try to
return it the next day.
“It is a delicate balance of loss prevention and good customer service, and the relationship has to be handled with appropriate finesse,” Rich Mellor, vice president of loss prevention at the NRF, told Bloomberg. The new tags are being implemented to avoid the common practice of return fraud known as “wardrobing,” an issue that the National Retail Federation estimates cost the industry $8.8 billion last year.
