... and the deadly ways they are being combined
Teens are using everyday household items to get high and entertain themselves. Everything from the spices in your kitchen to the ice in your freezer could be your teen’s next high … and with potentially deadly consequences. Teens are getting creative as they seek out obtainable highs and easy entertainment and they always seem to be a step ahead of us.
Here 8 common, seemingly-innocent things in your home your teen could be using (and what they’re doing with them!)…
Here 8 common, seemingly-innocent things in your home your teen could be using (and what they’re doing with them!)…
1. Cinnamon
The “cinnamon challenge” involves swallowing a spoonful of powdered cinnamon dry in less than 60 seconds. So what’s the problem? Well, the powder can be inhaled and cause breathing problems.
2. Chili Powder
This is similar to the cinnamon challenge, and both can result in serious breathing problems if the powder is inhaled into the lungs. A California girl recently died after ingesting chili powder and suffering a seizure.
3. Nutmeg
Nutmeg, a spice most of us have in the cabinet, contains myristicin, a hallucinogenic chemical that can produce a marijuana-like high when ingested. Nutmeg intoxication can lead to psychosis and even death.
4. Prescription Meds
You may not remember how many pills were left after you hurt your knee last winter. Well, if you’re not keeping track, your teen and his/her friends or their may be finishing them off for you. Unused prescription medications are an easy and dangerous high that many parents have just sitting in their medicine cabinet.
5. Paint Thinner, Glue, Etc….
“Huffing” is not a new phenomenon, but it is pretty darn scary, because it can be done simply by inhaling many common household items. Everything from paint thinner and acetone to glue and markers is a potential inhalant.
6. Marshmallows
Have you ever heard of the “chubby bunny” game? It involves kids fitting as many marshmallows in their mouth as they can and saying “chubby bunny” without swallowing or dropping any. They won’t get high playing this game, but they may choke. Deaths have been reported from playing.
Dangerous Combinations of Household Items
7. Salt and Ice
Done by placing salt on an arm or another body part and holding ice on it as long as you can, the risk is the potential for nasty burns. A teen in Chicago was hospitalized after receiving second-degree burns while attempting the salt and ice challenge.
8. Cough Syrup
Dexing (or Robo-Tripping) is a high created by ingesting large amounts of DMX, often found in Robotussin cough syrup.
Purple drank is created by combining cough syrup, alcohol, and jolly ranchers with Sprite. This concoction has been the cause of many deaths.
