Enjoy a Romantic Date Night For Less

Try one of these ideas for a special romantic night with your sweetheart without overspending

Cheap dating ideas

Cheap ideas for date-night

Don’t eliminate date-night just because you’re short on cash. You can still have fun (and even a little romance) on a tight budget.

Instead of going to the movies

After buying two tickets, popcorn and a drink, a date to the movies can cost you over $40. Cuddling on the sofa is much more comfortable that sitting in the theater’s seat, so why not make your own movie night? Use these easy ideas to get started:
  • Rent a new-release DVD or an old favorite
  • Pick up movie theatre sized candy at the drug store
  • Pop your own popcorn

Instead of going out to dinner

Rather than going out to dinner, where the meals, drinks, tax and tip can drain your wallet, enjoy a cozy night in for two.

Recreate the restaurant experience at home:
    • Set up a candlelit table for two
    • Get dressed up as if you were going out
    • For the meal serve an easy appetizer, simple salad, then for the main course choose one of your favorite meals.
    • Don’t forget dessert:

      Instead of lavish gifts

Think of something more sentimental and special between you both rather than overspending on jewelry, sweaters or other gifts.

      Thoughtful, inexpensive gifts:
      • Photo album of just your favorite moments together
      • Homemade card (use the kids’ crafts supplies)
      • Certificate they’d appreciate (30-minute back-rub or a night off from washing dishes)

Instead of a box of chocolates

Packaged sweets get marked up in early February, so hold on to your money and give another thoughtful treat:
    • Homemade Truffles
    • Raspberry White-Chocolate Cheesecake Bars
    • Chocolate-Dipped Fortune Cookies
    • Heart-Shaped Marshmallows

        Instead of sending flowers

This romantic gesture can really wilt your budget. Unless you are sending flowers to someone out of town, think of another option.
        • Shop your grocery store. Pick up a wrapped bouquet then arrange it yourself in a vase at home.
        • Pick-up a potted plant, which will last much longer than cut flowers.
Tip: Skip the pre-made mixed bouquets and create your own or buy two bunches of the same flower in the same color.

Instead of going to a concert

If going to hear live music is a favorite night out, you can still enjoy the music (just without the cost).

        Enjoy music for less:

Skip the tickets (and extra fees) by playing your favorite band’s album at home. (Move the furniture to clear a space for dancing.)
Want to watch the band play? Rent a music concert DVD from Netflix or your local library.
Check your local paper for free concerts. Many art and culture centers offer free concerts from classic to modern music.

        Mix it up

If you’ve exhausted traditional dating ideas and want something new, here is a list of affordable fun:
        • Trip to a coffee shop: Cozy up with latte and bring a deck of cards or a board game.
        • Go for a walk together: Explore a nearby park or neighborhood together (yes, holding hands).
        • Roller Skating: Reminisce about your early dating days at the rink (remember couple’s skate).
        • Plan a picnic: Pack a lunch and a blanket in the car and find a quiet pretty spot to enjoy lunch al fresco.
