Supplies:
Clear glass ornaments
Chalkboard spray paint
Bottles
Newspaper
Twigs
Directions:Step 1: To make these ornaments, I just popped a few twigs in some empty wine and beer bottles (luckily it was right after Thanksgiving, so we had plenty!) and then I removed the tops off the ornaments and hung them on the edge of the sticks. This made it really easy to spray them.
Step 2: Place the bottles, twigs and ornaments in a well ventilated area and on a surface covered with newspaper. Then, just spray away!
Be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and spread your newspaper or craft paper well beyond what appears to be your workspace! Because the ornaments are so high off the ground and you are spraying all sides, the spray really carries. I applied two coats, the second at least 3 hours after the first and allowed everything to dry completely for 24 hours.
I also had no intention of painting the bottles as well, but once I started going on the bulbs, I figured why not. I love the look of everyday objects with a solid matte finish; so much so, that when the bulbs were ready, I was almost hesitant to draw on them the finish was so smooth!
But I pushed forward, of course, and was so happy with the results. The chalk wiped off so easily, which was much more successful than I’ve had with chalkboard paint on a wall) it was fun to sketch, erase, and try again.
My sister, a grade school art teacher, fell in love with the idea and is going to use this as a take home gift for her students to make their parents. So simple and rewarding!
I got a little carried away with staging the shots for the finish product. There are so many cute ways to use these guys! I also fell in love with the twig in a bottle look. A little awkward and bobbly, but I find them super charming! A festive, but chic and toned down holiday décor piece.
