Although the act of wine tasting seems simple enough, a surprising amount of detail is necessary when pouring a glass of vino. And while we hope you’ve come a long way since those infamous boxed wine college binges, we understand if the concept of
wine tasting is somewhat intimidating.
The six “Ss” of tasting wine:
Sight, Swirl, Smell, Sip, Swallow & Savor
Sight
Pick up the glass of wine and hold it against a white background. White wines should range from pale yellow green to golden amber. Red wines should range from light cherry red to deep inky purple. The wine should be clear an clean, not cloudy.
Swirl
Swirl the wine in the glass to aerate the wine and release more of the bouquet and aroma.
Smell
Put your nose into the glass and inhale deeply. The human nose can differentiate more than two hundred scents in wine, including citrus, flowers, dried cherry and fresh blackberries.
Take a sip of the wine and let it linger in your mouth for a few moments. Think about what you taste. Is it sweet or acidic? What fruits do you taste? Is the aftertaste pleasant? Sip (my favorite part!)
Swallow & Savor
Swallow & Savor: Sit back for a moment and enjoy the wine.
