5 New Uses for Ice Cube Trays

Sure, everyone uses ice cube trays, but did you know that you are seriously under utilizing yours? Below are five nifty ways to use this common freezer item that’ll have you asking, “Why didn’t I think of that?!”

1. Earring Holder: Editor’s Tip from the August issue: “I store earrings in an extra ice cube tray. Each compartment in the tray perfectly houses one pair, and I can stash the whole thing in a drawer. No more orphaned earrings!” —Michelle Brunner

2. Coffee Ice Cubes: These bring a whole new meaning to iced coffee! Simply freeze hot coffee in an ice-cube tray, then use the cubes to cool your brew the next day—it won’t dilute your drink as it melts.

3. Herbs Divider: Hate it when you buy a bunch of herbs or pluck them fresh from your garden, only to find them dull and wilted days later? Freeze them! First, fill the tray half way with water. Make sure the leaves are down into the water, as best you can. Place the half filled tray in the freezer. Once the ice cubes are pretty much frozen, finish filling the try with water. Then put the tray back into the freezer to freeze solid. Once the ice cubes are frozen, remove from the tray and store in Ziploc bags. When ready to use, toss the ice cube into your favorite dish!

4. Smoothie Storage: Take your staple smoothie ingredients (ie. milk, spinach, juice, etc) and mix them into a blender. Then, pour mixture into an ice cube tray, freeze and then separate into plastic baggies. When it’s time to make a smoothie, just grab the cubes, whatever fruit you want, and mix! This way, you don’t have to pull out all the separate ingredients again.

5. Chicken Broth Container: The next time you make chicken broth (or want to make sure you use up the entire carton), pour and freeze it in an ice cube tray. This will give you small amounts of broth to throw in whatever you’re cooking!
