LIC Block Party

Saturday September 8, 2012
Sculpture Center
44-19 Purves Street at Jackson Avenue Queens

SculptureCenter, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in Long Island City this year, gives back to its local community by hosting a shindig with the Purves Street Block Association. Jam out with all-female nine-piece band Mariachi Flor de Toloache; have your pocket change polished in a performance-art piece by Clean Penny Service; and assist collaborative group Free Style Arts in creating a large-scale temporary sculpture made from record covers, wire and other found objects. Children and the young at heart can get whimsical makeovers courtesy of HiChristina! or become their favorite Picasso at a cubist face-painting station. Area painters, sculptors and artisans will sell their wares at an artists market, while Long Island City food vendors, including Burger Garage and Manducatis Rustica, will peddle refreshments. Look for Queens ice-cream and chocolate shop Malu, which has created a new Duchampian “readymade” vanilla flavor, with a surprise twist, for the occasion (one scoop $3, two for $5).—Vanessa Thill
