A Day on Roosevelt Island

Mozzaikwall and a group of friends had an awesome day in Roosevelt Island this weekend.
Before sharing our adventure let us give you a brief history of the island.

Brief history of Roosevelt Island
Roosevelt Island is part of the Borough of Manhattan (New York County) also known as Blackwell Island and Welfare Island.  In 1686 Robert Blackwell became the island's new owner and namesake. The City of New York purchased the island in 1828 for $32,000 and erects a penitentiary in 1832. The Blackwell Island Light, a 50-foot Gothic style lighthouse now on the National Register of Historic Places, is built by convict labor on the island's northern tip. In 1921 Blackwell Island is renamed Welfare Island.  In 1973 Welfare Island is renamed Roosevelt Island after Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt island is home to an estimated 12,000 people.

Roosevelt Island is about two miles long and lies between Manhattan to its west and the borough of Queens to its east. The island is accessible by train, car, and the Tramway from midtown Manhattan. The Tramway is a quick ride with breathtaking views of the city.  In addition to the rich history the island is a great hide away for a romantic day with someone special or a group outing.  Mozzaikwall and friends decided to station ourselves by the Lighthouse which offered great views of the water overlooking Manhattan and Queens on either side. The beautiful trees protected us from the rays of the sun while a much needed breeze created a relaxed atmosphere. The grass provided ample space for the children to run around and play while parents enjoyed a little volleyball, football, and long power naps.

Mozzaikwall recommend that you visit Roosevelt Island and make it a great day.  Until then please enjoy these wonderful pictures from our outing.
