Slash Your Health-Care Bill
Mayra Alvarez, director of public health policy at the Department of Health and Human Services, wants you to know these three easy ways to cut costs.
Broaden your search. Visit hrsa.gov to find a health center near you that accepts patients regardless of their ability to pay. Safety-net clinics often work on a sliding-scale basis and are committed to providing services for families with limited or no access to health care.
Look for free care. Under the Affordable Care Act, anyone who joined a new health-care plan after September 2010 must be offered preventive services (like new-baby care and well-child visits) with no out-of-pocket costs. Check with your health plan to see if you qualify.
Know your rights. Because of the Act, insurers can no longer deny coverage or limit benefits to kids with any type of preexisting condition (such as asthma or diabetes), so you don't have to worry about not being able to get health coverage for your child.
