What to Look For in Footwear
Just because the shoe fits doesn't mean you should wear it. Ask yourself these questions first.
1 How high is that heel?
Most doctors say 2 inches is acceptable, but 1 inch is much better for all-day wear. Just be sure the heel is wide enough to keep you from wobbling.
2 Is it flexible at the toe?
You should have enough range of motion in the balls of your feet to stand easily on your tippy toes.
3 Can you bend it in half?
If so you won't get enough support. Flimsy ballerina flats that twists easily in the middle can be as harmful to the feet as a 4-inch heel, warns Marlene Reid, D.P.M., president elect of the Illinois Podiatric Association. Save your flip-flops for weekends at the beach and the pool.
4 Does the insole give a little?
A shock-absorbing insole with a slightly raised arch will minimize stress on the feet, preventing calluses, planter fasciitis and even ankle, knee, and back pain.
