Back Om
If you have low back pain, the idea of doing yoga poses such as cobra or downward dog might make you cringe. But yoga can be an effective treatment.
In the largest study ever done on yoga and backache, which looked at 228 people with lower back pain, about one-third of the group did 12 weeks of weekly yoga classes. Another third did intensive stretching. The last third read self-help book about managing back pain.
Those in the yoga and stretching groups reported less pain and less need for medication than those who read the self-help book. The results lasted for at least six months. The researchers speculate that the strengthening benefits of yoga help ease back pain.
