Roosevelt served as the First Lady from 1933-1945. Roosevelt redefined the role of First Lady by being a civil rights activist and women’s rights advocate. She was as politically savvy and gifted as her husband and used those skills, along with her intelligence and poise, to advocate on behalf of African-Americans, women and the poor. During a time when many people, for reasons of race or gender, were not part of the traditional political process, Roosevelt used her position to ensure that the welfare of all people was considered. Her advocacy extended beyond her political duties into her private life. When her husband succumbed to polio, she continued her work as a human rights activist. She was instrumental in the United States’ support for the United Nations and after its formation she was selected to chair the committee that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She considered that document her greatest achievement.
The battle for the individual rights of women is one of long standing and none of us should countenance anything which undermines it.
