Safety Tips

Almost 90 percent of young children slept through a smoke alarm going off for 30 seconds, according to a recent study.  Keep your kid safe by following these recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association.

  • Install alarms on each level of your home and in every bedroom and hallway. If your kid doesn't hear it you will.
  • Teach your child what an alarm sounds like and have her test it with you. Tell her the beeping means to leave the house.
  • Show your kid two ways to exit each room of the house and pick an outside family meeting spot together, such as a neighbor's porch
  • Practice your escape drill as a family twice a year, both during the day and at night, since most home fires occur after dark.
  • Download an escape-plan checklist that includes a grid for drawing your plan an escape route.
